Driven by his cool, contemporary twist on that enduring classic 60’s aesthetic where artists cared deeply about the challenges of their generation – and a voice that will immediately bring to mind the edgy comfort of Neil Young – Doyle’s popularity is rooted in his ability to use his songs to, as he says, “help people make sense of themselves and the world. That is my prime directive with my music and lyrics.”

Despite the title “Lullaby,” the track – buoyed by Tim Pierce’s alternately shimmering and crackling electric guitar – is anything but sleepy. It’s a passionate chronicle about a relationship that goes through the ups and downs of life and teaches the lovers important lessons along the way.

Doyle emphasizes the importance of living every moment and being a loyal, trustworthy friend. No matter what happens or how the road twists and turns, he returns to the gentle reassurance of the chorus: “You and I were meant to be together/Like a lullaby we sang to each other.”

Like the wings of a butterfly, if I squeeze this review too hard, I fear I’ll damage something

Such is the fragility of the careworn lead vocal. TJ Doyle’s voice immediately puts one in mind of Mercury Rev’s Jonathan Donahue, albeit with a more controlled, lullaby-esque slow vibrato. The use of a generous reverb and delay make it even more of a hypnotic instrument.

The mix features a healthy dash of tremolo – it feels insistent in a good way, a throbbing pulse contained within the song’s skittering heart.

Musically, I was put in mind of the sort of arrangement that the debut album from Passenger favoured – allowing hi-hats and glockenspiel to exist front and centre in the arrangement alongside instruments like vocals and guitars.

With a title like Lullaby, you can have a fair guess at the feel and tempo of this piece, but the topline actually goes in some quite unexpected places, which is gratifying, as it allows you to latch on to the lyrics more readily. It cuts across the rhythm early on, and then holds still in unexpected places on notes that create a bittersweet dissonance, which is particularly effective for this.

Then, on the chorus, the topline becomes more sweet and accessible before passing responsibility for the hooks back to the seductive co-operation of guitar and glockenspiel.

The band are working out a lot harder than a cursory listen would imply, and their attention to detail is a pleasure to notice upon repeat listens. I would say that they deserve a shout-out, but this is a lullaby…

Having lived in five different cities on the East Coast by the time he was 10-years-old, T.J. Doyle now resides near the Angeles National Forest above L.A., where he composes music reminiscent of the ‘60s, full of tasty melodies and genuine sonic surfaces.

His smooth original sound has obtained beau coup popularity. Two tracks – “Everything” and “Living In Our Dream” – from his second album took the number on spot on Radio Indie’s Top 40 Chart, along with having his song “Anonymous,” a tribute to those who feel marginalized, nominated for the Round Glass Award.

The result is gorgeously irresistible and seductive.
Doyle’s distinctive voice frequently conjures up comparisons to Neil Young, but as he says, “That’s the way I sing. Can’t help it.”

“Lullaby” opens on a cool, velvety Americana melody flavored with creamy country filaments. A plump bass line and lightly crunching drums provide the rhythmic foundation, as wavering tremolo-heavy guitars glide atop, exuding dreamy, scrumptious harmonic flows. Softly gleaming strings infuse the tune with silky gentle suffusions.

A yearning, drawling guitar solo imbues the harmonics with indulgent hues, coruscating with lingering timbres, as Doyle’s voice soars on tones of slightly rasping essence, supplying the song with elusively devout washes of sound, tantalizing and exquisitely beautiful.

There’s a magical quality to the combination of Doyle’s sui generis voice and the drifting stream of the music, like merging the creamy heart of dream-pop with SoCal soft rock, adding luminous strings and alluring alt-country textures, and injecting it with lambent intimacy. The result is gorgeously irresistible and seductive.

“Lullaby” is marvelously wrought, projecting supple wafting dynamics, complex layers of color, and the wonderfully distinctive voice of T.J. Doyle.

It can be said that TJ Doyle is a throwback to another time. A time when music was born of the heart, the soul, and the mind. It can also be said that TJ Doyle is a modern musician determined to create songs with meaning, passion, and texture. Both statements are true.

Los Angeles based TJ Doyle is an artist who looks at the world while trying to understand the relationship we have with it. His first two albums, One True Thing and On The Horizon, explore the global connection, our relationship with nature and the world around us, and how in understanding them, we can better understand ourselves.
